Free, with no daily cap

Scan the packet. The numbers are already right.

Point your camera at a barcode and the manufacturer's own nutrition panel goes straight into your log. No searching, no guessing at a portion, no picking the least-wrong entry out of nine near-identical ones. It costs nothing, and there is no limit on how many you scan.

Why this matters

The fastest accurate log there is.

Typing a meal is fast. Scanning a packet is faster, and it removes the part where you have to decide whether the entry you found is the same product you are actually holding.

How it works

Camera, packet, done

Open the log, point the camera at the barcode, and the product's own nutrition panel lands in your entry. Set the portion in grams, ounces, cups or the pack's own serving size, and if it is something you eat often, re-logging it later is a single tap.

Free
  • Branded products, supermarket own-labels and restaurant items
  • The nutrition panel that came off the packet, not a crowd-sourced guess
  • Portion in grams, ounces, cups or the pack's own serving
  • Anything you eat often is one tap to re-log

The data behind it

A verified database, on the free tier

Behind the search box and the scanner is the fatsecret Platform API. Branded products, own-labels and restaurant items. Free members get the whole database, not a sample of it. Where Loopa's AI estimates a value instead of reading one, it says so on the entry and shows its working.

Free
  • The full database on the free tier, not a limited slice
  • Every AI estimate labeled as an estimate, with the working shown
  • Correct a portion or an ingredient in a tap
What it costs elsewhere

Everyone else charges for this

This is the row that surprises people. Barcode scanning is one of the first things anyone tries in a calorie app, and in every competitor we checked it sits behind the subscription. In Loopa it is free, uncapped, and there are no ads paying for it either.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is barcode scanning free in Loopa?

Yes, with no daily cap and no ads. It is part of the free tier along with typing a meal in plain words, saying it out loud, searching the food database, weight tracking and water tracking. There is no trial clock on it and no card required to use it.

Do other calorie apps charge for barcode scanning?

Every one we checked does. MyFitnessPal lists barcode and meal scanning as a Premium feature on its own Premium page, read 17 August 2026. Cronometer puts it in Gold. Fitia lists it as Premium on their Free vs Premium page, read 13 August 2026. Lose It! is Premium for new sign-ups, though it stayed free on legacy accounts. If a row here is wrong, tell us and we will correct it.

Where does the nutrition data come from?

The fatsecret Platform API, which covers branded products, supermarket own-labels and restaurant items with the nutrition panel that came off the packet. Free members get the whole database rather than a limited slice of it. Where Loopa's AI estimates a value instead of reading one, the entry says so and shows how it got there.

What if the barcode is not recognized?

You can still log it. Describe it in plain words or say it out loud (free, up to 10 AI entries a day) or search the database by name, unlimited and free. Photograph the plate if you are on Premium, the photo comes back as a list you edit line by line before any of it is logged. Loopa is not a dead end when a scan misses; the scanner is one of five ways in, and four of those five are free.

Can I fix the numbers if the packet is wrong?

Yes. Every entry is editable before and after it saves. Adjust the portion, change an ingredient, or correct a value. Nothing is locked once it is logged, and nothing you have already logged is ever removed.

Does it work on Android as well as iPhone?

Yes, on both, and it works the same way on each. Loopa for iPhone and iPad is on the App Store; the Android build installs directly from this site while its Google Play listing is in review. Both are free and both include the full set of tracking features.
